008: DARING to Change the Narrative of the Wedding Industry with DANIEL KIM

May 7, 2020

EPISODE SUMMARY

In today’s episode, we’re talking to Daniel of Daniel Kim Photography. You won’t want to miss this one! We know you’ll love hearing about the very daring leap Daniel made to stay true to his art, while delivering photos that his clients love. No matter where you are on your photography journey, you’ll find so much information and inspiration from this interview.

DANIEL DARES YOU

I want you to do the same project that I’m doing. You don’t have to do it to this extent. We talked about how I was shooting for myself or I’m trying to start shooting purely for myself. What that means is that I am not expecting any results.  So take five rolls of film. Shoot one a month but do not get it developed until the end of the year.

When there are no expectations, you can just be free. However, in photography, expectations are the results. How will you shoot if no one ever sees your photographs? That’s the question. How can you force that?

FAST FACTS ABOUT DANIEL KIM

What do you shoot with?

Contax 645 and a GFX modified with a Contax 80 lens. Also a Contax G2 with a wide angle 28mm lens. That’s what I use for my personal work,  I use a Fuji X 100 F with a super wide angle lens equivalent to an iPhone.

What’s your favorite post-wedding or event snack?

I always go home, drop off my gear for security. Don’t shower, don’t change. I immediately go to this taco shop called Los Firitoes.

What’s your favorite wedding/creative pump up jam?

Anything from Run The Jewels or Biggie, and a lot of Kendrick Lamar.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of your business?

Just being with my wife and my daughter, at the end of the day, you got to think about one thing, my wife grounds me, she is everything. The reason why is because I love my daughter, but I love my daughter because of my wife.

What is one daring the leap you’ve taken in your business?

Seeing that I’m ready to give up everything to shoot the way I want and was willing to give up relationships with vendors if my new vision didn’t align with them. I was ready to give up financial security. That was probably the biggest leap just because I knew that if I kept going, I was going to burn out and quit.
